Teddy HolcombExecutive Director/Visual Designer

Originally from Troutville, VA, Teddy Holcomb is currently in his fourth year serving as the Director of Percussion for the Wake Forest University Spirit of the Old Gold & Black. In addition to WFU he served as one of the Co-Directors of Percussion at Bassett High School in Bassett, VA. Teddy was involved with the Bassett music program for the past 9 years. While at Bassett High School the ensemble has received many honors including the 2003 Atlantic Indoor Association (AIA) Gold Medal in PSA (Percussion Scholastic A Class), they have appeared 7 times as a semi-finalist for BOA Grand Nationals, USSBA Virginia State Champions (2007, 2008, 2009), two time Regional Champions in PSA at the WGI Richmond, VA Regional (2008, 2010), Regional Champions in PSA at the WGI Spartanburg Regional (2010), Carolina Winter Ensemble Association (CWEA) Gold Medal in PSA (2009), and WGI World Championships Finalist in PSA (2009). Teddy has also served 2 years of consulting/writing for the Ronald Reagan High School Marching Band based in Pfafftown, North Carolina.
Teddy’s instructional/composing/design resume also includes such groups as the 2004 WGI (Winter Guard International) Scholastic Open Class Finalist Ronald Reagan High School from San Antonio, TX, the 2000 WGI Scholastic World Finalist Dobyns-Bennett High School from Kingsport, TN as well as the 2004 AIA Scholastic A Gold Medalist Jefferson Forest High School from Forest, VA & several other high school music programs in VA, PA, MO, and NC. He has also served as the Assistant Director/Visual Caption Head for the Independent Open percussion ensemble Epiphany at Coastal Carolina University from Myrtle Beach, SC and Co-Director/Visual Caption Head of the Independent World Constitution Indoor Percussion Ensemble based out of Raleigh, NC. Teddy also joined the Carolina Gold Drum & Bugle Corps percussion team this past 2011 season as a consultant.
Teddy served for four years as the bass drum technician for the Carolina Crown Drum and Bugle Corps from Fort Mill, SC. Under his direction with the drum corps, the bass line received many outstanding reviews and received two consecutive gold medals at the DCI (Drum Corps International) I&E (Individual & Ensemble) competition in 2002 and 2003, a first in the corps history. Teddy has studied under and worked with several of percussion’s biggest icons; including Andrew Beall, Bill Bachman, Thom Hannum, Colin McNutt, Allen Joanis, Jeff Queen, Paul Rennick, Philip Morgan, and John Beck.
As a performer, he has performed with the Crossmen Drum & Bugle Corps from Newark, DE (1997), the Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps from Canton, OH (1999), Music City Mystique Winter Drumline from Nashville, TN (1999-2000), and the percussive ensemble Plastic Musik, based out of Roanoke, VA, currently touring around the country performing at several different Colleges and Arts Venues (A primary performing act at Busch Gardens in Tampa, FL (2006), several NBA half-time performances, & America’s Got Talent).
Teddy is a Brother of Kappa Kappa Psi and a member of the Percussive Arts Society. He currently resides in Winston Salem, NC with his beautiful girls ~ Wife Anna and Daughters Jett and Piper!
Justin MabryCo-Executive Director/Battery Arranger

Originally from Roanoke VA, Justin Mabry is currently the percussion caption head and battery arranger for Carolina Gold Drum & Bugle Corps which received the 2010 & 2011 High Percussion award in Class A at DCA Finals. Justin received his Bachelor of Music Degree from Mars Hill College and is currently pursuing his Masters of Music degree at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Justin teaches private lessons and is a percussion instructor, arranger and clinician for several schools in North Carolina, Kentucky and Virginia as well as an adjudicator for several band circuits. He is currently on staff with Multiperc (multiple percussion services) as an instructor and clinician for both the Youth Percussion Ensemble and the Summer Percussion Camp. He is also currently a percussion arranger for Standing O Marching.
Justin has studied under and worked with several of percussion’s biggest icons; including Dr. Kristopher Keeton, Dr. Brian Tinkel, Dr. Brian Mason, Ian Hale, Tyler Dempsey, Allen Joanis, Teddy Holcomb, Chris Romanoswki, and Eric Miller.
As a performer, he performed with the Johnson City Symphony Orchestra and participated in the Mars Hill College’s marching band, percussion ensemble, marimba band, jazz band, and wind symphony. He has participated in Drum Corps International as a member of the Teal Sound Drum and Bugle Corps in 2004 that received the high percussion trophy. Carolina Crown Drum and Bugle Corps in 2005, 2006 and in WGI as a member of Odyssey Percussion Theater in 2008. Justin currently participates in the University of North Carolina at Greensboro wind ensemble and percussion ensemble.

Sean CombesAssistant Director/ Front Ensemble Arranger

Sean is an arranger, instructor, and clinician living in Cary, NC where he is the Percussion Director for the Wake Forest – Rolesville High School music program in Wake Forest, North Carolina. He is active as a percussion arranger and clinician for numerous colleges and high schools up and down the east coast and is featured on Standing O Marching, Dynamic Marching, and System Blue. Sean is an arranger and consultant for the George Mason University “Mean Green” independent percussion ensemble from Fairfax, Virginia; Wake Forest University independent percussion ensemble from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, as well as the front ensemble arranger/coordinator for the perennial DCA Finalist and 2010 DCA High Percussion Award Winner Carolina Gold Drum & Bugle Corps from Greensboro, North Carolina.
Sean attended Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA where he studied with Donald Bick and Howard Curtis, performing in the Wind Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, and various solo and chamber groups. He is also active as a freelance percussionist and maintains a private studio in the Raleigh/Durham area. Sean was a member of the world champion Cavaliers Drum & Bugle Corps as well as a 2001 PASIC clinic participant.
Cassie BelcherVisual Choreographer

Dance has been a part of Cassie Belcher’s life since the age of five. While attending Ferrum College Cassie was the captain of the dance team for two years, and programmed and choreographed eight recitals for the college’s dance department. During this time Cassie also worked in Roanoke, VA as a social dance instructor teaching recreational and competitive ballroom and latin students. No stranger to the WGI activity, Cassie marched for the Virginia Helmsmen in 2005 as a featured performer, and returned for the 2006 and 2007 seasons on staff as a choreographer and visual consultant. She has also worked with several scholastic indoor programs throughout NC as a movement consultant. When not teaching Cassie still loves to dance, and currently studies under ShaLeigh Comerford and Jessi Knight Walker in both modern and contemporary ballet. Cassie is excited for her new role with Wake Forest Independent and looks forward to working with such a talented and diverse group of educators.
Charles PattonDesign Consultant

Charles Patton is currently the Director of Bands at Southern Alamance High School in Graham, NC. As a North Carolina Teaching Fellow, he received his Bachelor of Music in 2006 and his Master of Arts in Teaching in 2007; both from the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill. He has consulted and taught for marching groups throughout North Carolina including Green Hope High School, Clayton High School, Garner High School, and Cedar Ridge High School. He was the 2009 Visual Caption Head and 2010 Program Coordinator for Carolina Gold Drum and Bugle Corps.
Charles marched two seasons with The Blue Knights Drum and Bugle Corps from Denver, CO as a euphonium player and drum major. He is a member of NCMEA and an alumnus of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.
Matt HartwellDesign Consultant

Matt Hartwell is originally from Salem, VA where he graduated from Salem High School in 2004. After high school he began his college career at Morehead State University studying Euphonium under Dr. Stacy Baker. After deciding to change majors he transferred to Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA to study Business.
In 2004 he marched Baritone with Capital Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps from Columbus, OH. In 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008 he was a member of The Cavaliers Drum and Bugle corps from Rosemont, IL playing both Baritone and Tuba. In 2007 he had the honor to perform with The Aimachi Marching Band from Nagoya, Japan playing Tuba. In 2010 Matt had the honor of designing and teaching for the His Majesty of Oman. His shows for the Royal Guard of Oman were viewed by many influential world figures including His Majesty Sultan Qaboos of Oman, His Majesty King Abdullah II of Jordan, and Her Majesty Elizabeth II of England.
Matt has been on the Visual Staff with The Santa Clara Vanguard Drum and Bugle Corps since 2010. Matt has worked with Powhatan High School as the visual technician since 2006. He is also the Visual Caption head of the George Mason University indoor drumline and has held that position since 2009. 2010 was Matt’s first season as a Visual Designer for Thomas Jefferson High School of Science and Technology. Matt looks forward to his new role with Wake Forest Independent and is honored to work a very talented design team.
Jordan WebbVisual Caption Head

Originally from Wilson, North Carolina, Jordan now resides in Chapel Hill where she is currently pursuing her Master of Arts in Teaching degree. She also earned her Bachelor of Music in trumpet performance at Carolina studying under Jim Ketch. Jordan performed with many of the UNC ensembles, including the Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Symphony Band, University Band, Jazz Band, and the Marching Tar Heels, where she served as a drum major her senior year. Jordan marched with the Carolina Crown Drum Corps in 2008, 2009, and 2010 as a field conductor and a member of the trumpet and mellophone sections. She is currently the Visual Caption Head of the Carolina Gold Drum and Bugle Corps, which competes within the DCA circuit. Jordan has worked with several marching bands in North Carolina including Wakefield High School, Millbrook High School, Fuquay-Varina High School, Clinton High School, and Charlotte Catholic High School.
Matt LinerVisual Consultant

Matt Liner currently the director of bands at Meadowlark Middle School located in Winston-Salem, NC. In 1999 Mr. Liner graduated cum laude from Appalachian State University with a major in instrumental music education and a minor in psychology. Mr. Liner has had great success as a band director in Davidson and Forsyth Counties. Matt began his career teaching at East Davidson High School and E.L. Brown Middle School in Thomasville, NC. Following his tenure in Davidson County he became an assistant band director at Ronald Reagan High School and Meadowlark Middle School. Over his career the ensembles of these schools have received 25 superior ratings at the district/region concert and jazz band festivals. He has had the privilege of instructing three ensembles that have had the honor of performing for the North Carolina Music Educators Annual In-Service Conference and has presented a clinic on developing middle school percussion ensembles. Each year many students from his ensembles regularly qualify for membership in county, district, region and all-state honors ensembles as well as earn many superior ratings at solo and ensemble festivals.
Mr. Liner has had the privilege of conducting several honors jazz/concert band clinics and has adjudicated marching band competitions across the southeast.
In 1996 &’97 Matt was a member of the world finalist Carolina Crown Drum and Bugle Corps and was a part of the corps’ instructional staff in 2000 & ’01. He has been a visual consultant/instructor for Wake Forest Independent Indoor Percussion Ensemble where he continues to serve as staff member. As a drill designer, Mr. Liner writes for several bands in North Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee.
Matt serves as a member of the board of directors for the Northwest District Bandmasters Association and is the section chairman for the North Carolina Music Educators Association Jazz Section. Matt’s professional affiliations include the Music Educators National Conference, North Carolina Music Educators Association, the North Carolina Bandmasters Association, the Northwest District Bandmasters Association, the North Carolina Music Educators Association Jazz Section, Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society of Education, Pi Kappa Lambda Honors Society of Music, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Professional Music Fraternity, and the American School Band Directors Association.
Instructional Staff
Justin BelcherBattery Caption Head/Tenor Technician

Justin is a percussion educator, arranger, and adjudicator from Durham, NC and joins Wake Forest Independent for the 2012 season as battery caption head and tenor technician. During his eighteen year career, Justin has taught and written for numerous award-wining scholastic and independent programs throughout WV, NC, VA, and TX. In addition to WFI, Justin currently teaches at Wake Forest-Rolesville High School and is the front ensemble arranger for Ledford High School and the Ledford Indoor Percussion Ensemble. From 2005-2007 Justin served as battery caption head for the Virginia Helmsmen, a six-time WGI World Championship PIO finalist and from Danville, VA.
Justin has performed at all levels of the activity, including Drum Corps International as a member of the Tarheel Sun tenor section in 2000, and Winter Guard International as the tenor section leader and ensemble section leader in 2004. While attending Virginia Tech for his bachelors and masters degrees in Computer Science and Human-Computer Interaction Justin was a member of the university’s symphonic and marching ensembles. After graduating, Justin and his wife Cassie moved to North Carolina where Justin performed as a member of the Raleigh Civic Chamber Orchestra, Raleigh Civic Symphony, and the Triangle Brass Band. For the past four years Justin has worked at SAS Institute in Cary, NC as an interface designer.
Justin is a marching percussion specialist for Vic Firth Inc, and an independent artist for Dynasty USA.
Corey DenhamFront Ensemble Caption Head

Corey is currently pursuing his undergraduate degrees in Music Education and Percussion Performance from Mars Hill College. Corey served as the Front Ensemble Technician for Carolina Gold Drum & Bugle Corps in 2010, helping lead the ensemble to their 2010 high percussion award in Class A at DCA finals. Corey instructs and arranges for several high school marching bands and percussion ensembles through out North Carolina. This will be Corey’s second season on staff with 2011 WGI finalist Wake Forest Independent.
As a performer, Corey performs with Mars Hill College’s Wind Symphony, Percussion Ensemble, Marching Band, Jazz Band, and Marimba Band. He performs professionally in Asheville, NC area. Corey’s drum corps experience includes performing with the Carolina Gold Drum & Bugle Corps and the 2011 DCI World Class Finalist Spirit of Atlanta Drum & Bugle Corps.
Corey is a member of the Music Educators National Conference, and the Percussive Arts Society.
Jonathan PrattSnare Technician/ Visual Designer

Jonathan is in his first year working with Wake Forest Independent as the 2012 Snare Technician. Jonathan played snare with Constitution Percussion from 2007-2008. Constitution was a group that competed in the Independent World Class of Winter Guard International. He marched snare with the Troopers Drum and Bugle Corps in 2009, when the Troopers returned to the DCI World Class finals for the first time in 23 years. Jonathan has also performed with the Triangle Brass Band on percussion. Jonathan began his instructional career by teaching the Cary High School Marching Percussion section in 2008. Cary has a successful history of competing in events with Bands of America, United States Scholastic Band Association, Atlantic Indoor Association, and Winter Guard International. Jonathan is in his fourth season of performing this role for Cary High School. Most recently, Jonathan was a Snare Technician and Battery Drill Designer for the 2011 Carolina Gold Drum and Bugle Corps. The group competes in DCA and ended their season with a First place percussion finish in Class A.
Throughout his percussion career, Jonathan has been fortunate to benefit from the following distinguished instructors: Will Goodyear, Teddy Holcomb, Matt Ramey, Murray Gusseck, Matt Savage, Jeff Queen, Dylan Thompson, Kevin Welborn, and Ralph Hardimon.
Brandon CoffeyBass Technician

Brandon is currently attending the University of North Carolina at Greensboro pursuing a bachelor’s degree in business with a concentration in information systems and operations management at the Joseph M. Bryan School of Business. During his time at UNCG Brandon has been a worship/student leader in Campus Outreach, where they seek to “glorify God by building laborers on the college campus for the lost world.”
Brandon attended Mars Hill College in 2006/2007 pursuing a degree in Music Performance and Education. While at Mars Hill he studied under Dr. Brian Tinkel (Director of Percussion Studies) and participated in the colleges Marching Band, Percussion Ensemble, Marimba Band, and Wind Ensemble.
Brandon was the bass drum section leader for Carolina Gold Drum & Bugle Corps in 2009 and served on staff as the bass drum technician for the 2010 and 2011 seasons, helping lead the ensemble to their 2010 and 2011 consecutive High Percussion Awards in Class A at DCA World Championships. Brandon also served on staff for Wake Forest Independent during their 2011 season as the bass technician, helping lead the group to their 5th place finish in Independent A at WGI World Championships. Brandon will be returning on staff for the 2012 season serving as the bass technician, eager to help the members succeed both on and off the performance floor.
Nanako TsurumiFront Ensemble Technician

This will be Nanako’s first year working with Wake Forest Independent. She is currently studying music at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she was a member of their marching band, wind ensemble, and percussion ensemble. Nanako also performes with the Triangle Brass Band as a percussionist. She played tenors in WGI’s independent World group Constitution in 2007-2008, and she was the timpanist for Carolina Crown in 2009. She has taught front ensembles at a variety of high schools in the Cary, NC area, and she was also a counselor at Matt Savage’s drum camp in 2008 and 2010. She has also been the front ensemble technician for Carolina Gold Drum & Bugle Corps in 2011 helping lead the ensemble to their second consecutive High Percussion Award in Class A at DCA World Championships. Nanako has been taught by Will Goodyear, Teddy Holcomb, Matt Ramey, Murray Gusseck, Lee Beddis, Ian Hale, Steve Ballard, Andrew Markworth, and Matt Savage.
Logan BallCymbal Technician

Logan Ball is currently pursuing his bachelor’s degree in Music Education at East Tennessee State University under the direction of Dr. Rande Sanderbeck. Logan serves as a composer/arranger for the ETSU drumline as well as the principal percussionist for the wind ensemble. Logan teaches private lessons and has served as a percussion instructor/arranger at Gate City High School, Sullivan East High School, Tennessee High School, and Science Hill High School. Logan is in his first year working with Wake Forest Independent as the Cymbal Technician. Logan played snare drum with Wake Forest Independent during the 2011 season for their 5th place finish and first ever finals appearance in WGI World Championships.
Logan has had the privilege of being instructed by and/or working with: Rande Sanderbeck, Teddy Holcomb, Bill Bachman, Kenneth Carrico, and Mickey Burmer. Logan is also a member of the Percussive Arts Society and President of The ETSU chapter of PAS.

Tyler HoneycuttBattery Consultant
Tyler Honeycutt is a battery consultant for Wake Forest Independent Percussion and is currently the Battery Coordinator for the Carolina Gold Drum and Bugle Corps. The 2011 season will mark his 6th year with the corps. Tyler began his time with Gold as a marching member in the tenor line in 2004 and was tenor section leader in 2005. He served as Tenor Technician for the 2006 and 2009 seasons and had the privilege of serving as Battery Coordinator and Snare Technician for the 2010 DCA High-Percussion-Award winning Carolina Gold Percussion Section.
Outside of Gold, Tyler teaches percussion at Hendersonville Middle School. He has studied under Danny Raymond, Jr., Dr. Brian Tinkel, Dr. Tracy Wiggins, Louis Cato, and Derek Johnson. Tyler received his education degree from Mars Hill College with a minor in music. He is a brother of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia national music fraternity and is an active member of the Percussive Arts Society. Tyler currently lives in Hendersonville, NC where he works as a math teacher at Hendersonville Middle School.
Emory HensleyBattery Consultant

Emory Hensley is currently the director of music at W.D. Williams Elementary School, and Weaverville Primary School. He is a graduate of Mars Hill College with a degree in Music Education. While at Mars Hill he participated in the marching band, percussion ensemble, marimba band, and wind ensemble. Emory has instructed many middle and high school percussion programs throughout North Carolina and currently works with Charles. D. Owen High School. He has been on staff with the Carolina Gold Drum and Bugle Corps (2010 & 2011 DCA Class A High Percussion Winner) as well as Wake Forest Independent (2011 WGI Independent A Finalists). Emory has been an instructor for the MulTiPerc Summer Percussion Camp since 2007.
Emory has participated in Drum Corps International with the World Class Finalist Carolina Crown Drum and Bugle Corps, as a member of the tenor line. He has also been a member of Odyssey Percussion Theatre, a Percussion Independent World group in WGI.
Emory is a member of the Percussive Arts Society, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and NAfME.
Christopher PowellFront Ensemble Consultant

Christopher “Kit” Powell originally hails from the frozen tundra of Wisconsin’s Northwoods. Hiding inside from sub-zero childhood winters, Kit took to incessantly banging pots and pans until his father built him his first drum-kit out of paint cans and garbage pails. Progressing through school ensembles, Kit worked his way through many musical disciplines finding along the way an undeniable passion for music.
Kit is currently a Senior at Mars Hill College, where he studies under Dr. Brian Tinkel in pursuit of the Bachelor of Music in Percussion Performance degree. He is an active chamber musician and soloist, performing with all ensembles at MHC including the Percussion Ensemble, Marimba Band, Wind Symphony, and Mountain Lion Marching Band. Kit also performs regularly with the Asheville Community Theatre as pit percussionist, most recently in a four-week run of the Broadway hit musical RENT. This last spring brought the premier of is his first piece for percussion quintet, Rotations in Glass: Kaleidoscope, which he plans to submit in his application portfolio for a master’s degree in composition. Kit plans to move west following his December graduation and pursue composition and live audio sampling.

Ron Payne Board President — ronpayne@wfindependent.org

Ron Payne holds a Juris Doctorate Degree from Wake Forest University School of Law (2011), and a Bachelor’s in Music Education & Euphonium Performance from Appalachian State University (2004). Before attending law school, Ron was a high school band director, where his bands consistently achieved excellent and superior ratings. Also, he formed the first-ever indoor drumline at his school, competing in the CWEA circuit. Ron’s marching band was invited to perform at multiple college football games at Davidson College and Lenoir-Rhyne University. He serves on the Professional Staff of the Wake Forest Marching Bands and is a member of Kappa Kappa Psi, the American Bar Association, and the North Carolina Bar Association. Ron and his wife Linda currently reside in Hickory, NC.

Holly Johnson currently resides in Thomasville, NC and works at High Point Regional Hospital in High Point, NC. She’s married to Andre Johnson and has two children, both percussionist! Until stepping down recently, Holly worked with her church’s teen youth group for the past 8 years. Holly has been involved with WFI since their start in 2009, as their Volunteer Director. She has also served the past 2 years, on the Board of Directors as Secretary and Vice President with the Ledford Band Booster’s, Inc.
Anthony Tang Secretary of the Board — atang@wfindependent.org

Anthony Tang is a 2011 Graduate of Wake Forest University. During his four years at Wake Forest, he served as Battery Section Leader in 2008 and as Drum Major in 2009 and 2010 for the Spirit of the Old Gold and Black (SOTOGAB). Additionally, Anthony served as the first Chapter President of the newly recolonized Kappa Zeta Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi. He currently works in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at Wake Forest University. Anthony is originally from Rocky Mount, NC and currently resides in Winston-Salem, NC.

Christopher Stehle is a graduate of Appalachian State University, holding a Master of Science in Accounting (2008), Master of Science in Criminal Justice and Criminology (2008), and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in Accounting and Economics (2006). He is a veteran of the Appalachian State Marching Mountaineers and was a member of the ASU Men’s Glee Club. Chris is a Life Member Kappa Kappa Psi, National Honorary Band Fraternity and currently resides in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Ellen Dorsett currently teaches science at Ledford Middle School in Thomasville, NC and was previously at Wiley Middle School in Winston Salem, NC. She has a BA in Education from UNC-CH and an MA in Education from ASU. *To avoid age issues Ellen won’t go into how long she’s been teaching, but it is definitely longer than any current student has been living….! (As young as she looks, it’s hard for us to believe that…) Ellen has been working with the Ledford Panther Regiment since 2002 doing pit crew, uniforms, logistics and administrative duties, band booster officer etc. She has also worked with the Ledford Indoor Percussion Ensemble (LIPE) since 2005 fixing uniforms and administrative/logistic stuff.

Originally from Ninety-Six S.C., Joseph M. Vaughn is a graduate of Newberry College with a degree in Business Administration. While at Newberry, he played four years of varsity football, where he was voted most valuable offensive player. After graduation, Joseph worked for Milliken for two years before taking a position with Hanesbrands in Statesville, NC. After 20 years, Joseph now lives in Winston-Salem, NC, and continues to work for Hanesbrands as the Director of World Wide Procurement. In this position, he manages offices in the US, Thailand, Honduras, Dominican Republic, and El Savador. He is happily married to Crystal Vaughn, and have two children

Crystal Vaughn is a Graduate of Lander University with a BS Degree in Sociology and a Minor in Special Education. Since college, she has worked with children and adults with physical and developmental disabilities. Crystal is currently employed with Wake Forest Baptist Health. She is a service coordinator with the Infant Toddler Program, serving children from birth to three years in age. She enjoys spending time with her family by watching her daughter ~Margaret, 13~ dance, her son ~ Alexander, 17~ playing the drums, and her husband Joseph M. Vaughn.
